I never thought I would be writing about dirt, but I promised. In my previous article about container gardening, I promised to give you my secret recipe for the dirt that has won me blue ribbons at state fairs across the USA. I must have had low blood sugar or something, I have never told anyone outside of my family about this. But I won’t be leaving it up for long! Print this out unless you want to buy my next book which will contain this information as well as some other tips not published here.
If you think all dirt is the same, you’re in for a wonderful surprise! And if you’ve had some disappointing results from growing plants in containers before, those days are over. This dirt works miracles.
Before you read this, go back and read my article “Container Gardening” http://realearthsolutions.com/2017/06/01/its-time-to-get-the-garden-going/so you will be up to speed. Understand that this “growing medium” (a fancy term for dirt), is meant for use in containers and should not be used in conventional “in ground gardens”. We will be covering that later. This growing medium is reusable year after year, but it will need to be remixed and have… Continue reading
- Are we in an outright war?
Remember when you were growing up? In school we studied American History. One of the biggest chapters was on “The Civil War”, or North Vs. South. While so many different groups have tried to put different spins and meanings on why it occurred, the truth is that two entirely different ways of viewing our nation were battling for supremacy. One side (The North’s) believed that the Federal Government in Washington should be the primary source of rules and policy, while the other side (The South’s) believed that each state was a separate entity, and the only function of the Federal Government was to ensure that The Constitution (as written) was upheld, and that the nation was protected from outside forces. Obviously The North won. We now live in the results of that victory.
Fast forward 152 years to today. Our nation is completely divided again, with violence erupting more and more frequently. Once again the main issue is of differing views on what America is and should be. Instead of North Vs. South, we have Liberals Vs. Conservatives. America First Vs. The One World dogma. But the divisions go far deeper… Continue reading
In the last post we covered what a bug-out bag is, and listed some of the basic needs. But what about seasonal specific items? Let’s start with winter in all but the southernmost states. If a quick evacuation is needed during the winter, the necessities change greatly. Anyone who lives up north knows to keep their car full of fuel, and stocked with a few items such as a warm blanket, a couple of days worth of ready to eat food such as MRE’s, nutrition bars etc; a case of drinking water with at least 3 or 4 bottles in the passenger area, and the rest in the trunk; a gas can with several gallons of gas (or diesel), several days worth of medications, and a few paperbacks and toys if needed.
Much of the same rules apply to bug out bags. In the winter months, the number one enemy is hypothermia. So in addition to the basic items listed in part 1, we need to add at least one full set of thermal underwear per person, several pairs of premium… Continue reading
( The following post was originally published in May 2016, But the question of what lies ahead for America still remains.)
As I sit in my “Hamshack” (office) gazing out at a beautiful spring day in the Ozarks, I’m reminded of how fortunate we are as Americans. Then, as my eye is drawn to the ticker of news at the bottom of my TV screen, my pleasant reverie is quickly gone!
Most of the news is so terrible that we become immune to it.
“50 Christians beheaded by ISIS”
“Suicide bomber kills 20”
“Russian fighters buzzing US Navy ships”
“Borders ignored daily by waves of immigrants”
I’m just numb. And that doesn’t even begin to cover the horror of watching our nation being pillaged by self-serving politicians, our Constitution being systematically rewritten, our freedom to live our life as we wish being constantly stripped away if you are a Christian and not gay, our military left a fragmented ghost of itself, and insane environmentalists who think we should go back to a pre-industrial society.
It just goes on and on, ad nauseum!
There is no unbiased news left in this country. Every channel spins… Continue reading
Always count the cost of what you get free…
How would you like to start slashing those electric bills immediately? Like today? It’s possible!
One of the most overlooked ways to cut electric costs is through passive solar. The sun provides free energy to the earth that can be used to power our lives.
You’ll see passive solar used in most textbooks on solar energy and they somehow make it sound like a new theory of electricity. Folks, it’s not complicated. It’s been around since Neanderthals lived in caves.
Passive means exactly what it sounds like. You don’t have to do anything to get it and the best part is that it’s either free or relatively low cost. It means using the sun for heat or shielding yourself from the intense heat. It is a critical part of any on or off grid power system.
Before you start thinking about using solar/wind power, on-grid or off-grid, you should first consider energy efficiency in your homes. It’s nothing new. American Indians in the southwest built cliff homes over a thousand years ago. These little energy efficient dwellings were homes built into the side of cliffs. This sheltered them… Continue reading
Why We Declared Independence.
On July 4th, 1776 The 13 Colonies declared Independence from England. They did it because they were tired of being taxed into ruin, yet having no say in how those funds were spent, being told how they could worship, dealing with an oppressive government that could do anything to anyone without accountability, and most of all, because they were tired of the government taking away their freedom, their dignity, and their right to defend themselves! Because of the courage of The Founding Fathers, and the Constitution they carefully crafted, America has been the shining light of equality and freedom for the world for 240 years!
Today, the Constitution is under direct attack by the very people elected to defend it. Our rights are being eroded a little more each day. Our leaders are corrupt, and have completely lost touch with “We The People”. There are so many scandals involving our highest politicians that it’s impossible to keep track of them all. Other than The Bill of Rights there has not been a single amendment to the Constitution made that has increased the freedom or rights of individual Americans. Ever. Every single amendment has… Continue reading
First, let’s say that being self-sufficient and living an alternative lifestyle means different things to each of us. It’s both a journey and a destination and begins with small steps.
It starts with a dream of being independent and then we develop that dream into reality. Yes, it does require motivation and hard work. But don’t be fearful, it’s not as hard as you think! If you are fed up being stuck in an overcrowded city, where you’re surrounded by people speaking every language but English, where criminals roam the streets freely, and the noise and stink never stop, well then….Read on…
- You’ll regain your freedom:
Freedom from being a wage slave.
Freedom from constantly having to worry about your job.
Freedom from an unpleasant overbearing boss.
- You can say good-bye to long commutes. No more snarling traffic and road ragers. No more breathing the fumes of cars and trucks. No more wasted time which you could use for your own benefit.
- No more dress codes. Dress the way you like and the way that expresses you best.
- Forget about going to a gym and paying dues. Forget training for marathons or running down hard pavement. Get… Continue reading
I live in SW Missouri in the rolling hills of the Ozarks. Near me are a number of Amish communities. The state of Missouri says there are over 9,000 Amish from several sects living here at the present time. Their numbers are growing rapidly as Amish from other parts of the country are moving to Missouri.
One of the highlights of visitors touring our area of Missouri is seeing an Amish family in their plain clothes traveling slowly down the road in their old fashioned, horse-drawn buggies. There are often cars stopped in the middle of the road photographing Amish homes, farms, and people. They desire privacy and anonymity, but the tourists don’t respect their wishes. It’s quite common to see the tourists laughing and pointing at the Amish folk, and their lifestyle. It reminds me of the way that most of society views people who live alternative lives, or the prepper community. We often make fun of those who are different, or things we don’t understand.
These tourists tend to romanticize the Amish and believe that they live totally independent from the world around them and that their life consists of churning butter and taking warm, fragrant loaves… Continue reading
A New Direction
I love to read blogs. Prepper blogs. Survivalist blogs. Homestead blogs. Self-Reliant Living Blogs. When I decided to start my own blog I was faced with several important decisions. What direction should mine take? The Prepper Lifestyle of living offers so much necessary information that I started there. I enjoy many of the prepper websites and have my own favorites.
But as I was writing for my blog I realized that’s not really who I am. My real love is living an alternative lifestyle, which I’ve been doing for my entire adult life. Although my parents lived conventional lives my mother was a faithful reader of Mother Earth News. You could find me sprawled out reading them too. What I liked most were the articles about people who went off-grid and were in remote and/or rural locations. I didn’t know it then but they filled me with a desire to live like this.
Is total self-sufficiency possible?
However I also liked my “creature comforts”. Electricity. TV. Especially grocery stores! I’ve spent many years trying to balance the two with limited success until the last few years.
I have learned that living a self-sustaining lifestyle is very… Continue reading
