Preparations for Disasters
( The following post was originally published in May 2016, But the question of what lies ahead for America still remains.)
As I sit in my “Hamshack” (office) gazing out at a beautiful spring day in the Ozarks, I’m reminded of how fortunate we are as Americans. Then, as my eye is drawn to the ticker of news at the bottom of my TV screen, my pleasant reverie is quickly gone!
Most of the news is so terrible that we become immune to it.
“50 Christians beheaded by ISIS”
“Suicide bomber kills 20”
“Russian fighters buzzing US Navy ships”
“Borders ignored daily by waves of immigrants”
I’m just numb. And that doesn’t even begin to cover the horror of watching our nation being pillaged by self-serving politicians, our Constitution being systematically rewritten, our freedom to live our life as we wish being constantly stripped away if you are a Christian and not gay, our military left a fragmented ghost of itself, and insane environmentalists who think we should go back to a pre-industrial society.
It just goes on and on, ad nauseum!
There is no unbiased news left in this country. Every channel spins… Continue reading
Worst Case Scenarios
You wake up one night dripping with sweat. What’s wrong? After tossing and turning several minutes you decide to get up and check. You don’t turn on any lights because you don’t want to wake up the family so you feel your way down the hall to the thermostat. The little light that usually allows you to read the temperature is out. Uh Oh. This doesn’t look good.
A few more steps to the kitchen where you pull a flashlight out of a drawer and back to the thermostat you go. It’s set on its usual 73 degrees but the temperature shows it’s 91 degrees in the house. Whoa! The AC must be broken. How long will it take to get a repairman out, you wonder, dismayed at the thought of the bill.
You glance out the front window and realize that it’s pitch black out there. Your usual floodlights that light up your driveway are out and no lights appear on your neighbor’s porches either.
There’s a sense of relief as you realize it may not be your AC after all. It’s probably an electrical outage. Lately there’ve been a lot… Continue reading
Why are our Police being targeted?
It just keeps happening over and over- yet another senseless tragedy! Truly our country is at a major turning point. These vicious attacks on our police are increasing in frequency and becoming much more organized. Clearly there is a calculated intent behind all of this.
Is There A Reason?
There is a Latin phrase going back over 2000 years that is still in use today by police and detectives: “Cui Bono”. It means “who benefits”. In almost all crimes other than crimes of passion the criminal expects to get some benefit from the crime for example-a bank robber expects to get money for his efforts. On a larger scale ISIS expects to gain power and control over millions of people, as well as land, military assets, and much more. Of course so did Hitler, Mussolini, Stalin etc. So let’s apply these words to the systematic attacks on police, ever intensifying racial hatred, and our top leaders being immune to prosecution no matter how obvious their crimes are.
No one can argue that these attacks are clearly incited by various organizations. So the question is- why? What do you… Continue reading
Tragedy and Uprisings Daily
We certainly live in “interesting” times. We start a new week with our nation and the world in chaos! Every day a new horror is revealed. The United States is at a tipping point. Not since the Civil War has our country been so divided. Our president and other leaders are directly responsible for a large part of what is happening in our country. The media is fanning the flames as fast as they can! Everywhere we turn we are faced with Anger, Hatred, and Uncertainty. People are rioting day and night against the very people protecting them! And it only looks to get worse as we move into the upcoming elections.
No Wonder Things Are Out Of Control!
I did some research on our population, and uncovered some shocking facts. Did you know that as of Feb. 2016, over 80.1% of Americans live in a urban area.? And here is where it gets crazy- 94.7% of the land in America is classified as rural. That means that 80.1% of all the people in the US live on only 5.3% of our land. I got all of this information from the… Continue reading
First, let’s say that being self-sufficient and living an alternative lifestyle means different things to each of us. It’s both a journey and a destination and begins with small steps.
It starts with a dream of being independent and then we develop that dream into reality. Yes, it does require motivation and hard work. But don’t be fearful, it’s not as hard as you think! If you are fed up being stuck in an overcrowded city, where you’re surrounded by people speaking every language but English, where criminals roam the streets freely, and the noise and stink never stop, well then….Read on…
- You’ll regain your freedom:
Freedom from being a wage slave.

- No more dress codes. Dress the way you like and the way that expresses you best.
- Forget about going to a gym and paying dues. Forget training for marathons or running down hard pavement. Get… Continue reading

I live in SW Missouri in the rolling hills of the Ozarks. Near me are a number of Amish communities. The state of Missouri says there are over 9,000 Amish from several sects living here at the present time. Their numbers are growing rapidly as Amish from other parts of the country are moving to Missouri.
One of the highlights of visitors touring our area of Missouri is seeing an Amish family in their plain clothes traveling slowly down the road in their old fashioned, horse-drawn buggies. There are often cars stopped in the middle of the road photographing Amish homes, farms, and people. They desire privacy and anonymity, but the tourists don’t respect their wishes. It’s quite common to see the tourists laughing and pointing at the Amish folk, and their lifestyle. It reminds me of the way that most of society views people who live alternative lives, or the prepper community. We often make fun of those who are different, or things we don’t understand.
These tourists tend to romanticize the Amish and believe that they live totally independent from the world around them and that their life consists of churning butter and taking warm, fragrant loaves… Continue reading
A New Direction
I love to read blogs. Prepper blogs. Survivalist blogs. Homestead blogs. Self-Reliant Living Blogs. When I decided to start my own blog I was faced with several important decisions. What direction should mine take? The Prepper Lifestyle of living offers so much necessary information that I started there. I enjoy many of the prepper websites and have my own favorites.
But as I was writing for my blog I realized that’s not really who I am. My real love is living an alternative lifestyle, which I’ve been doing for my entire adult life. Although my parents lived conventional lives my mother was a faithful reader of Mother Earth News. You could find me sprawled out reading them too. What I liked most were the articles about people who went off-grid and were in remote and/or rural locations. I didn’t know it then but they filled me with a desire to live like this.
Is total self-sufficiency possible?
However I also liked my “creature comforts”. Electricity. TV. Especially grocery stores! I’ve spent many years trying to balance the two with limited success until the last few years.
I have learned that living a self-sustaining lifestyle is very… Continue reading
You think you’re ready for anything because you’ve been prepping a long time? Your food supply looking good? Your water supply in place? Your medical supplies on hand?
How ready is your family? “Great,” you answer. “We’ve discussed all the possible things that can happen and what we should do.”
That’s what I thought about my troops. Then I decided to run a little experiment. I chose a Saturday when everyone was home, including grandkids and some of their friends.
My Little Experiment
All I did was disconnect the satellite TV dish from the box. You would have thought World War III had started.
Within minutes I had a riot brewing as my hamshack was flooded with hysterical kiddos. They stormed in announcing that they couldn’t get their favorite programs. In fact, one said, “It feels like my umbilical cord has been cut.” (She’s the dramatic one.)
I acted surprised. Soon the room was filled and from all sides they were demanding that I do something and that I do it right now! I went into the living room, looked at the TV and said, “Yep, it’s not working.”
They weren’t amused.
Grabbing my phone, I made… Continue reading
How to Teach Alertness Skills by guest blogger, Granny O., Michigan
Granny here. Let me begin by saying that I don’t intend to go over old ground. Every insult that can be thought of has been said about Preppers being a wild-eyed fringe society who tote guns to keep people from stealing their food supplies while training their children to be fearful of zombie apocalypse attacks.
Nothing could be further from the truth! I’m grandmother to several children whose parents are Preppers and even though I say it myself, they’re delightful, normal kids who do none of the above.
In fact, I think they’re the most fortunate children in America because they have wise parents who are training them to be prepared for whatever may come and to be self-reliant. Who could argue with that?
As a former school teacher and elementary school counselor, I can’t resist teaching my grandkids something when they’re with me. But I sugarcoat it in the form of games and they seem to love it and beg to spend the night whenever they get the chance.
I really thought I’d invented this game until that TV… Continue reading
